Ingredients

2 cups all-purpose flour

1/3 cup granulated sugar

2 teaspoons baking powder

1/2 teaspoon baking soda

1 teaspoon ground cinnamon

1/2 teaspoon salt

1/2 cup unsalted butter, cold and cubed

1/2 cup buttermilk

1 large egg

1 teaspoon vanilla extract

1 cup peeled and diced apples (Granny Smith or Honeycrisp recommended)

1/2 cup chopped walnuts or pecans (optional)

For Egg Wash: 1 egg + 1 tablespoon milk (mixed together for brushing)

For the Glaze:

1 cup powdered sugar

2 tablespoons milk

1/2 teaspoon vanilla extract

A pinch of ground cinnamon

Instructions

Preheat the Oven: Begin by preheating your oven to 400°F (200°C) and line a baking sheet with parchment paper to prevent sticking.

Mix Dry Ingredients: In a large mixing bowl, combine the all-purpose flour, granulated sugar, baking powder, baking soda, ground cinnamon, and salt. Whisk thoroughly until all dry ingredients are well blended.

Cut in the Butter: Add the cold, cubed butter into the flour mixture. Using a pastry cutter or your fingertips, mix until the mixture takes on the appearance of coarse crumbs, leaving visible bits of butter.

Combine Wet Ingredients: In a separate bowl, whisk together the buttermilk, large egg, and vanilla extract until you achieve a smooth consistency.

Combine Mixtures: Pour the wet mixture into the bowl containing the dry ingredients. Gently stir together until just combined, taking care not to overmix the dough.

Add Apples and Nuts: Carefully fold in the diced apples and, if using, the chopped walnuts or pecans, ensuring they are evenly distributed throughout the dough without overworking it.

Shape the Wreath: Turn the dough out onto a lightly floured surface and gently shape it into a round disc about 1-inch thick. Using a sharp knife, slice the disc into 8 equal wedges, similar to slicing a pizza. Create a circular wreath by arranging the wedges on the prepared baking sheet with their tips pointing toward the center.

Apply Egg Wash: Brush the tops of the scone wedges with the prepared egg wash, ensuring they are thoroughly coated for a rich, golden finish after baking.

Bake: Place the scone wreath in the preheated oven and bake for 18-22 minutes, or until the scones are golden brown and a toothpick inserted into the center comes out clean.

Prepare the Glaze: While the scones are baking, mix together the powdered sugar, milk, vanilla extract, and a pinch of cinnamon in a small bowl. Whisk until you achieve a smooth glaze.

Glaze the Scones: Once the scone wreath has finished baking and is slightly cooled, drizzle the glaze generously over the top for added sweetness and visual appeal.

Serve: Serve the scone wreath warm or at room temperature. It pairs beautifully with a cozy cup of tea or coffee for the perfect festive treat!

                          Prep Time: 15 minutes | Total Time: 40 minutes | Servings: 8

Presentation Tips: Consider garnishing the center of the wreath with a sprinkle of chopped pecans or a few thin apple slices for a beautiful touch.
