Ingredients

1 prepared tart crust (store-bought or homemade)

4 medium Granny Smith apples, peeled, cored, and thinly sliced

1 tablespoon fresh lemon juice

1 teaspoon ground cinnamon

1/4 teaspoon ground nutmeg

1/4 cup granulated sugar

1/4 cup packed brown sugar

1/4 cup unsalted butter, divided

1 cup heavy cream

1 teaspoon pure vanilla extract

1/2 cup caramel sauce (store-bought or homemade)

1 tablespoon all-purpose flour (optional, for thickening)

Pinch of salt

Chopped pecans or walnuts for garnish (optional)

Instructions

Prepare the Tart Shell: If using a homemade tart crust, begin by preheating your oven to 350°F (175°C). Roll out your dough to fit a 9-inch tart pan, pressing it firmly into the pan and trimming any excess around the edges. Use a fork to prick holes into the base to prevent bubbling. Chill the crust in the refrigerator for about 30 minutes. Bake the crust in the oven for 15-20 minutes until it is lightly golden. Remove from the oven and allow it to cool completely.

Toss the Apples: In a spacious mixing bowl, combine the sliced apples with lemon juice, granulated sugar, brown sugar, cinnamon, nutmeg, and a pinch of salt. Toss well until the apples are evenly coated. Let the mixture sit for about 10 minutes to allow the apples to release their juices.

Cook the Apples: In a large skillet over medium heat, melt 2 tablespoons of butter. Add the prepared apple mixture to the skillet and sauté, stirring occasionally, for approximately 7-10 minutes. You want the apples to soften slightly while maintaining their shape. If you wish for a thicker consistency, sprinkle the flour over the apples and stir well to combine. Remove the skillet from the heat and allow the apple mixture to cool slightly.

Make the Caramel Filling: In a medium saucepan set over medium heat, melt the remaining 2 tablespoons of butter. Once melted, pour in the heavy cream and vanilla extract, stirring continuously to combine. Gradually whisk the caramel sauce into the mixture until smooth and heated through. Let it simmer gently for 2-3 minutes, then take it off the heat.

Assemble the Tart: Preheat your oven again to 375°F (190°C). Evenly distribute the cooked apple mixture into the cooled tart crust, ensuring that it fills the crust nicely. Carefully pour the caramel filling over the apples, allowing it to cover them thoroughly.

Bake the Tart: Place the assembled tart into the preheated oven and bake for 30-35 minutes, or until the apples are tender and the caramel filling is bubbly and slightly thickened.

Cool and Serve: Once baked, take the tart out of the oven and let it cool for a minimum of 15 minutes. For an extra touch, drizzle additional caramel sauce on top and sprinkle with chopped pecans or walnuts for added texture. Slice into wedges and serve warm, optionally paired with a scoop of creamy vanilla ice cream.
